How wonderful to be
listening on a lazy Sunday afternoon to SAFM Radio, and the Fireside Chat with Roger
Webster.
His topic today was the
book, The Strandveld,
Africa's Foot of Isolation, by Marius Diemont.
Wonderful
stories about the history of the area stretching from just beyond Hermanus to
the mouth of the Breede River - adventures of its pioneers
and gripping tales of shipwrecks, skulduggery and bravery along this
eastern coastline of South Africa. The book is a veritable treasure chest of
information about the towns of the area - such as Bredasdorp,
Napier, Arniston - and stories about the old farms, the new wineries, the
birds, the whales and the fauna and flora. The entire book is richly illustrated
with colour photographs. Thank you, Roger Webster, for
telling listeners about this great great find!
About Marius Diemont
"I have been privileged to have known much of
this coast for more than fifty years and I have a deep attachment to its
isolation and splendour," says author Marius Diemont, a former journalist
and PR consultant. The pleasure of angling and being at the sea first drew him
to this unspoiled coast and for the past 30 years he and his family have
holidayed at the family's Arniston home.
